Talmont-sur-Gironde
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Edward I of England, as Duke of Aquitaine, founded this fortified bastide in 1284 on a clifftop promontory over the Gironde estuary. Little remains of the walls, but its grid of low, whitewashed houses with pink tiles, kept low against the wind, fills with hollyhocks in summer. At the cliff edge the Romanesque church of Sainte-Radegonde, once a stop for pilgrims crossing the estuary, looks straight out over the water.
Highlights
- The Romanesque Église Sainte-Radegonde on the cliff edge, listed since 1890 (FR)
- The small seaside cemetery beside the church, full of hollyhocks in summer
- The Musée de Talmont, on the life of the village fishermen
- Estuary fish once landed here: sturgeon, now meagre, shad, lamprey and elvers
- The GR 360 long-distance footpath and the estuary marshes, rich in migrating birds
