Rochefort-en-Terre

Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France

·

In the early 1900s the American painter Alfred Klots bought the château of Rochefort-en-Terre and restored it, and his son Trafford went on painting there and hosting visiting artists. The Breton village climbs the southern flank of a rocky ridge, its old town held in by a loop of the Saint-Gentien stream. In 2016 French television viewers voted it the country's favourite village.

Highlights

  • The château, a neo-Gothic manor built on medieval ruins
  • Naïa Museum of fantasy and kinetic art, named after a local witch
  • Notre-Dame-de-la-Tronchaye, with a fortified tower and Flamboyant Gothic north front
  • The 16th-century calvary on the church square, carved with scenes of the Passion
