Oingt
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Golden limestone, coloured by iron oxide, is what Oingt is made of: a restored medieval village on a ridge at about 520 metres, looking over the Azergues valley in the Beaujolais. The Romans had a castrum here and planted the vines still grown around it, and the lords of Oingt left a 13th-century keep and the Nizy Gate. Their castle chapel is now the village church.
Highlights
- The keep, open to visitors, with a Gallo-Roman capital on show
- The Nizy Gate, survivor of the 13th-century castle
- The church's Gothic choir, with eight carved columns and gilded statues
- Marguerite d'Oingt, one of the first writers in Franco-Provençal (FR)
- Exhibitions in the 15th-century former town hall
