Mont-Dauphin
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
After a Savoyard invasion in 1692, Louis XIV sent Vauban to lock the Alpine valleys, and Mont-Dauphin is the result: a fortified town on a rock terrace above the meeting of the Durance and the Guil. Barracks, ramparts and the unfinished church of Saint-Louis fill the site, now a UNESCO World Heritage listing with Vauban's other fortifications.
Highlights
- Vauban's fortress, part of the UNESCO-listed Fortifications of Vauban (FR)
- The church of Saint-Louis, never finished: only choir and transept stand
- Views over the Guil canyon flowing down from the Queyras
- The Main du Titan, a pinnacle of hard conglomerate rock
- The barracks, historic garden and Chapelle Saint-Guillaume
