Barfleur
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
In the Middle Ages Barfleur was one of Normandy's busiest ports and a chief point of departure for England; today a small fishing trade still works from its harbour. At just 60 hectares it is the smallest commune in the Manche, on the Val de Saire coast near the northeastern tip of the Cotentin. A coastal path leads north to the tall lighthouse at Gatteville.
Highlights
- Sentier des Douaniers coastal path (GR 223) to the Gatteville lighthouse
- Gatteville lighthouse, 71 metres tall, on the Pointe de Barfleur
- Market on the Quai Henri Chardon, every Saturday morning
- Musée Atelier de Barfleur on rue Saint-Nicolas
- 'L'histoire d'un port', an easy walk around the harbour
