Aiguèze
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
The name comes from aigo, water, after the springs that rise along the fault where Aiguèze sits. Seen from the Ardèche, the village hangs over the river at the mouth of the gorges, guarded by the ruins of a medieval fort whose watch path looks into the canyon. Its church, Romanesque in origin, was redecorated in 1910 with gifts from a village-born Archbishop of Rouen.
